Kansas City summers write the same story every year: a line of storms rolls through, and the next morning half the metro has limbs down. What most people don't know is that KCMO has an actual storm playbook — after major storms the city activates free debris pickup and free drop-off windows. It ran exactly that plan in June 2026. Here's how the system works, and what to do when your pile is bigger than the system.
The city's storm plan: two free channels
When KCMO activates storm cleanup, there are typically two options. First, appointment curbside pickup: you reserve a slot through 311 or the myKCMO app during a short booking window, and crews work through the reservations. Second, free drop-off windows at the Missouri Organic leaf-and-brush sites for a set stretch of days. Both are storm-activated — they exist after the city declares them, announced through 311 and local news, not year-round.
The prep rules that make or break pickup
- Cut debris to roughly 4-foot lengths — crews won't take whole limbs
- Bundle with twine or rope, never wire or plastic tape
- Curb by the deadline morning — miss it and the truck doesn't come back
- Storm debris only: leaves and grass clippings are excluded from storm pickup
Outside a declared storm event
A storm that wrecks your yard but doesn't trigger a citywide plan leaves you with the normal system: the year-round leaf and brush drop-off sites (free for KCMO residents on Saturdays, ID required), your suburb's brush program, or a haul-away. The insurance note worth 30 seconds
If the storm damaged structures — fence down, limb through the shed — photograph everything before any cleanup starts, debris included. Homeowner's policies often cover debris removal connected to a covered loss, and adjusters want pictures of the mess, not the cleaned yard. Ask your agent before you assume it's all out of pocket.
