Free city pickup in Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City, Missouri picks up furniture and couches for free, by appointment, for single-family homes and buildings of 6 units or fewer. Book online, through 311 or at (816) 513-1313. You get up to 15 items and under 500 pounds per appointment. Set everything within 3 feet of the curb by 7 AM on your day, and not before 3 PM the day before. List every item when you book; anything not on the list stays. Our bulky item pickup guide has the rest of the rules.
In the suburbs, ask your hauler first
- Overland Park: since 2022 your hauler has to give at least one bulky pickup a year. Confirm with your hauler which items it covers.
- Lenexa: your hauler includes one bulky curb pickup a year, and Dumpster Days takes furniture for the vehicle fee.
- Shawnee: one free bulky pickup per calendar year from your hauler (furniture yes, refrigerators no), plus the yearly landfill voucher.
- Lee's Summit and Blue Springs: no city trash service, so ask your hauler. Blue Springs says some private trash haulers will take certain bulky items at the curb for a fee.
- Independence: no city bulky pickup. The Drop-Off Depot takes furniture from residents on the second Saturday of each month, April through October, for a per-vehicle fee. The 2026 season is over.
Donating a couch
Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes select upholstered couches and chairs that are complete and in good condition, free of tears, stains or pet damage. It takes no sleeper sofas and no mattresses. Pickup is free when you book online, or $99 for a priority pickup; by phone it's 816-231-6889, option 3, then 1. You can also drop off Monday to Friday 9 to 5 or Saturday 9 to 4 at the four stores: 4701 Deramus Ave (East Bottoms), 9605 Dice Lane (Lenexa), 13531 Wyandotte St (Martin City) and 8516 N. Oak Trafficway (Northland).
Goodwill MOKAN takes drop-offs at its stores and does pickups case by case. It won't take mattresses, baby furniture, large appliances, TVs or exercise machines, and it doesn't say how it handles sofas, so call first. The Salvation Army takes unbroken furniture, sofas included, but the rules vary by location: call 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825) to confirm for your address. Taking a sectional apart
Most sectionals come apart, and each piece is far easier to carry than the whole thing. Look underneath where two pieces meet for a metal bracket or clip. Many lift straight up to unhook; others unscrew. Take the cushions off first, move one piece at a time, and keep any screws in a bag taped to a piece. If you plan to donate it, keep every piece together, since ReStore only takes complete furniture.
Why sleeper sofas and recliners are so heavy
A sleeper sofa hides a folding steel bed frame and a mattress inside, so it weighs far more than it looks. Tie the bed closed before you move it so it can't swing open on the stairs. A recliner carries a steel reclining mechanism, and a power recliner adds a motor, so carry it upright with two people. ReStore doesn't take sleeper sofas at all, which leaves city pickup, a self-haul or a paid haul for most of them.
If the couch has bed bugs
The EPA's advice is not to throw furniture out if it can be treated. If you do get rid of it, make it unusable first so nobody takes it home: rip the covers, remove the stuffing and mark it "Bed Bugs". Then wrap it in heavy plastic and have it picked up quickly. Tell whoever picks it up about the bed bugs before they arrive.
Hauling it yourself
If you have a truck or trailer, where to take junk yourself in Kansas City lists every landfill and drop-off in the metro with hours and payment rules. Strap the couch down and tarp the load: Independence requires it, and an uncovered load is a ticketable offense on most metro highways.
What we charge to haul a couch
We haul a couch for $125 to $189 and a sectional for $149 to $275, with our $125 trip minimum. We carry it from any floor, and you get a firm written price on-site before we lift it.
