Disposal guide
What we take. What we can't. Where to drop the rest.
A complete Kansas City disposal guide. If we can't haul it, we'll tell you exactly where it goes.
✓What we take
- Furniture (couches, dressers, dining sets, etc.)
All household furniture. We donate what's still useful to local KC charities and recycle metal components.
- Mattresses & box springs
Mattresses carry a small per-unit disposal fee included in our quote. We route them to KC mattress recycling where possible.
- Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units
We follow EPA Section 608 — refrigerant is recovered at a certified KC facility, metal is recycled.
- Washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges
Standard appliance pickup. We disconnect on-site where safe (we don't do electrical disconnects — that's your electrician).
- Electronics (TVs, computers, monitors, small electronics)
Small per-item disposal fee for CRTs and large TVs. Routed to KC e-waste recyclers.
- Yard waste (brush, leaves, branches)
Within reason. Live trees and anything requiring tree-service equipment are excluded.
- Construction & remodel debris (drywall, lumber, tile, demo waste, cabinets)
C&D routed to appropriate KC transfer stations. Asbestos, lead, and other regulated materials require specialty abatement (we will refer you).
- Hot tubs
Most accessible standard-sized hot tubs. Quote depends on access — multi-deck or built-in tubs may need additional crew.
- Pianos
Most uprights. Grands and full-size baby grands require specialty piano-movers — we will refer you.
!What we can't take — and where to drop it instead
These are the categories the law (and common sense) says we shouldn't move. We'll always point you to the right local Kansas City option.
- Paint (oil or latex)
Regulated hazardous waste in KC. Most paint stores accept latex; oil-based requires HHW drop-off.
Where to drop it- Kansas City Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection ↗
- → Local Sherwin-Williams & Home Depot — many accept dried latex
- Motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, transmission fluid
Hazardous. Auto-parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto) accept used motor oil for recycling.
Where to drop it- → AutoZone / O'Reilly / Advance Auto — most accept used motor oil free
- KC HHW collection for antifreeze + gas ↗
- Propane tanks (any size)
Pressurized — explosion risk. Exchange small tanks at gas stations; large tanks via licensed propane companies.
Where to drop it- → Blue Rhino exchange at any KC-area gas station
- Tires
Regulated separately. Most tire shops accept old tires for $3–$5 each.
Where to drop it- → Discount Tire / Firestone / Big O Tires — most accept for a small fee
- → Jackson County tire amnesty days (seasonal — check city site)
- Car batteries
Lead-acid batteries are recycled at auto-parts stores — most pay a small core charge for returning them.
Where to drop it- → AutoZone / O'Reilly / Advance Auto — accept all car batteries free, often pay $5–$15 core
- Asbestos, lead-based materials, vermiculite
Requires a licensed abatement contractor. Do not move or disturb yourself.
Where to drop it- → Search "Kansas City asbestos abatement" — licensed contractors only
- Biohazards, medical waste, sharps
Regulated medical disposal only. Pharmacies often accept expired meds.
Where to drop it- → Kansas City prescription drug take-back program (year-round at most police stations)
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives
Contact local police or sheriff for firearm/ammunition disposal. We do not transport.
Where to drop it- → KCPD / Jackson County Sheriff — both have safe disposal programs
FAQ
Common disposal questions
Hazardous materials require specialty handling and end up at different disposal facilities than household junk. It's safer for everyone (us, you, the disposal-site staff) to route them correctly. We're happy to direct you to the right local drop-off site.
