Every garage cleanout hits the same shelf: half-used pesticide, pool chemicals, brake fluid, a jug of mystery liquid, old gasoline. That shelf is the one part of the job no junk hauler — us included — can legally load, because it's household hazardous waste. The good news: the KC metro has one of the better free HHW systems in the country. Here's how it actually works.
What counts as HHW
The short test: if the label says caution, danger, flammable, or poison, it's HHW. That covers pesticides and herbicides, pool and cleaning chemicals, automotive fluids (oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, old gasoline), solvents and strippers, and partially-full aerosol cans. A few categories have their own dedicated routes we've covered separately — paint, batteries, propane tanks, and fluorescent bulbs each have a full guide of their own — but everything on the list above rides the HHW system.
Missouri side: the KC Water program
Kansas City, MO's HHW program is run by KC Water at a permanent facility on the city's Environmental Campus — free for residents of KCMO and a long list of participating MARC-district communities (Independence, Blue Springs, Liberty, Gladstone, Belton, Raytown, and more) with proof of residency. Ordinary household loads need no appointment; very large loads (600+ pounds) are appointment-only. Lee's Summit's Resource Recovery Park is the metro's other permanent Missouri-side HHW facility, and the regional program also runs mobile collection events around the metro every year — Blue Springs, Independence, Liberty, Grain Valley, and others each get dates. Kansas side: appointment-only in Johnson County
Johnson County runs its HHW facility on an appointment system — book online, drop off free if you're a county resident. It also holds second-Saturday collection events spring through fall and offers mobile pickup for home-bound residents. Olathe and Overland Park residents both route through the county program.
The prep rules that make drop-off painless
- Keep everything in its original container with the label — never mix chemicals to save space
- Box containers upright so nothing tips in the trunk
- Aerosols: completely empty cans can go in the regular trash — anything with product left goes to HHW
- Old gasoline goes in a proper gas can, not a milk jug
- A genuinely unknown mystery jug? Take it anyway — identifying it is literally the staff's job
Where we fit (and where we legally can't)
We're the crew for everything around that shelf — the garage full of stuff, the basement, the shed — but the HHW itself can't ride in our truck; that's a legal line, not a preference. What we actually do on cleanouts: set the hazardous items aside in one spot, tell you exactly which program takes them, and haul everything else. The HHW run is usually one free trip you can make the same week.
