Two separate problems live in your fire pit: the ash, which people get dangerously wrong, and the pit itself, which is one of the easiest disposals on this whole site. Ash first, because that's the one that starts dumpster fires.
Ash: wait longer than you think
Embers stay live inside a cold-looking ash bed for 24 to 48 hours — that's how trash trucks catch fire. The safe routine: leave ash in the pit or grill for a full day or two, stir it with a metal tool to check for warmth, then scoop it into a metal container — a coffee can or ash bucket with a lid — before it goes in an outdoor trash cart. Never dump ash on dry grass, never into a plastic bin the same day, and never rinse it down a drain, where it sets up like weak concrete.
The garden question: wood ash yes, briquette ash no
Ash from plain firewood is a legitimate garden amendment in small doses. Charcoal briquette ash is not the same thing — especially the easy-light kind, whose additives don't belong in soil you grow anything edible in. If it came from a bag, send it to the trash (cooled and canned), not the tomato bed.
The pit itself: it's scrap steel
