A real Christmas tree is the rare piece of junk with a genuinely good ending: every January, the metro chips thousands of them into mulch, mostly free. The system works if you know two things — where your city's drop-off is, and what disqualifies a tree from the chipper.
Kansas City, MO: the leaf & brush sites, first two January Saturdays
KCMO's route is the city's leaf and brush drop-off sites, free for trees on the first two Saturdays of January with a Kansas City, MO ID (or a utility bill matching your ID) — non-residents pay a small per-tree fee. The trees become mulch that's periodically available free to residents, which is about as good as a disposal story gets. Our yard waste guide covers the sites and the year-round rules.
Kansas side and the suburbs
Kansas City, KS traditionally opens several parks as free tree drop-offs through the end of January for residents. Most suburbs run their own version — a drop-off week, a designated park, or curbside collection through the trash hauler in early January. The pattern is universal; the dates are local. Check your city's January announcement before hauling.
The rules that get trees rejected
- Everything off: lights, ornaments, hooks, tinsel, and the stand — one wire strand can foul a chipper
- No bags: the plastic tree bag that got it out of the house comes back off at the drop-off
- Flocked (fake-snow) trees usually can't be chipped — check your program's rule before hauling one
- Artificial trees never go to tree recycling — donate a usable one, or it's regular bulky trash
Never the fireplace
Burning a dried Christmas tree indoors is a genuinely bad idea — dry evergreen burns explosively fast and deposits creosote in the flue, which is how chimney fires start. Outdoors, most metro cities don't allow open burning of it either. The chipper is the right ending.
Where we fit
Every January we grab trees as add-ons — cheapest when we're already coming for the post-holiday cleanout: the boxes, the broken decorations, the old furniture that Christmas replaced. One pickup, the whole aftermath gone, tree routed to chipping. If it's just the tree and you have a truck, the Saturday drop-off is free and we'd tell you so.
