How to dispose of drywall in Kansas City

Drywall can't go in the curbside cart in KCMO — here's where it actually goes: C&D landfills near KC, recycling for clean scrap, and when a haul-away wins.

Whether it came off the wall in one satisfying sheet or a hundred crumbly chunks, old drywall piles up fast — and it's heavier than it looks, because gypsum soaks up moisture and dust adds up by the bag. It's also one of the most common "can I just trash this?" questions we get, and in most of the metro the answer is no. Here's where it actually goes.

Can it go in the trash? Mostly no

Kansas City, MO doesn't accept construction materials in the curbside trash cart, and the city's bulky-item pickup excludes loose building materials too — so there's no free curbside route for drywall in KCMO. In suburbs served by private haulers, a small bagged amount from a patch job sometimes rides along in the cart, but that's hauler-by-hauler; check yours before you bag up a whole room. (Our KC bulky-pickup guide covers what each city program does and doesn't take.)

C&D landfills take it, for a fee

Construction and demolition debris goes to C&D landfills rather than regular trash landfills, and the metro has public-facing options: Pink Hill Acres in Blue Springs takes C&D material from the public on the Missouri side, and Johnson County has C&D landfills on the Kansas side. Expect a per-load or per-ton fee, and call ahead for current hours and rules — most facilities screen incoming loads.

Clean scrap: recycle or donate it

New, unpainted drywall scrap — the offcuts from a hanging job — is recyclable gypsum, and RecycleSpot.org (the metro's recycling directory) lists current takers. Full unused sheets are donation material: Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations resell building supplies. Demolition drywall is a different story — once it's painted, textured, or moldy, recycling is off the table and it's a C&D disposal item.

The asbestos caution (pre-1980 homes)

In homes built before about 1980, the joint compound and textured finishes on drywall can contain asbestos — the drywall itself usually doesn't, but the mud and popcorn texture on it might. Before you sand or demo a large area in an older house, get a test kit or an inspection. If it comes back positive, that's licensed-abatement territory: not a DIY landfill run, and not something any junk hauler (us included) can legally touch.

When we haul it

Drywall rides along in most of our remodel and demo hauls, priced by the truck space it fills from our $100 trip minimum, and we route it through the right C&D facility so you don't spend a Saturday at a landfill scale. Honest math: one bag of patch-job scraps is a trash-cart question for your hauler; a room's worth of tear-out with no truck to move it is exactly our kind of job.
