How we handle it
We carry it straight out — upstairs bedroom, apartment, wherever it is — no dragging it to the curb yourself. A single mattress starts at $69; a mattress plus box spring runs $89–$129. Mattresses are roughly 75% recyclable (steel springs, foam, cotton, wood), so we divert them to a recycler rather than the landfill when we can.

Doing it yourself? You can haul a mattress to the Jackson County or Johnson County transfer station for roughly $20–$50, but most pickup trucks can't fit a king without it flying out, and stained/bedbug mattresses must be wrapped before transport. If you're buying a new one, many KC-area retailers (Mattress Firm, Costco, IKEA) will haul the old one for $20–$50 at delivery — worth asking before you call anyone.
