How we handle it

It goes to the transfer station, which means the landfill. Kansas City has had no public mattress recycler since Avenue of Life ended its program in 2023, and we're not going to tell you otherwise. You can haul a mattress to the Jackson County or Johnson County transfer station for roughly $20–$50, but most pickup trucks can't fit a king without it flying out, and stained or bedbug mattresses have to be wrapped before transport. If you're buying a new one, many KC-area retailers (Mattress Firm, Costco, IKEA) will haul the old one for $20–$50 at delivery. Ask about that before you call anyone.

No, and we'd be skeptical of any Kansas City hauler who says they do. The metro's only public mattress recycler (Avenue of Life) closed its program in 2023, and Missouri and Kansas have no mattress-recycling law like California's or Oregon's. Mattresses we haul go to the transfer station. Not really. There is no free public mattress drop-off in the metro. The closest thing to free is your city's bulky-item pickup (in KCMO you schedule it through 311), which costs nothing but runs on the city's calendar, not yours, and some cities require the mattress bagged in plastic first. Hauling it to a transfer station yourself runs about $20–$50. And if you're buying a new bed, most KC-area retailers will take the old one for roughly $20–$50 if you add haul-away at checkout. That's usually the cheapest exit of all.
