Old tires are tricky — most haulers won't take them. Here are the four legal disposal options in Independence and the wider KC metro.

Tires are restricted from regular landfill disposal across Missouri and Kansas — they're processed separately because they don't compact well and pose fire/mosquito risks in landfills. Most junk haulers (including us) can't take them. Here's where they actually go.

1. Your tire shop on next install ($3–$8 per tire)

If you're replacing tires anyway, the installer will dispose of the old ones for a small per-tire fee. This is the simplest option for routine swaps.

2. Independence + KC tire-recycling drop-off events

Most KC-metro cities run periodic free tire-recycling drop-off events — usually 2–4 per year. Independence runs them at the Public Works yard. Check the city solid-waste calendar for the next date.

3. Commercial tire recyclers

A few KC-area tire recyclers (Liberty Tire Recycling, for example) accept tires year-round for a per-tire fee. You haul, they process. Best for large quantities.

4. Tire shops that accept disposal

Some independent tire shops will accept old tires for disposal without a new tire purchase, for $4–$8 each. Call ahead to confirm.

What we do during a garage cleanout

When we hit a tire stack during a garage cleanout, we set them aside and tell you where to take them. We can't take them with us — but we can usually point to a city drop-off date in the next 30 days.
