How to get rid of junk for free in Kansas City

Yes, we are a paid junk removal company writing a guide to the free options. We would rather you know them. Most of what fills a garage can leave for nothing if you have time, a way to move it and a match between the item and a program that takes it. Here is every free or nearly free route in the metro as of September 2026, the catch on each, and the point where free stops being free.

1. Your city's bulky pickup

Kansas City, Missouri runs a free bulky item pickup by appointment, scheduled online or through 311 at least 48 hours ahead. As posted this September: single-family homes, duplexes and buildings up to six units, up to 15 items per pickup, each under 500 pounds, every item listed when you book, at the curb by 7:00 AM and not before 3:00 PM the day before. It refuses tires, car batteries, hazardous materials, yard waste and anything not on your list. Read the city's bulky page before you book; the rules have changed more than once.

• Independence has no city program. Trash is a private subscription (Waste Management, Republic, Ted's and others), and each hauler runs its own bulky pickup — ask yours what your plan includes before you pay anyone else.
• Lee's Summit and Blue Springs: private haulers, bulky pickup depends on your plan.
• Raytown has no city trash service; four Clean-Up Coupons per household per year, $5 each and worth $25, sold at City Hall (10000 E 59th Street) and redeemed with GFL. No hazardous waste or appliances.
• Overland Park and Lenexa require every licensed hauler to include at least one bulky curb pickup a year in the base rate — schedule it with your hauler; some charge for certain items.
• Shawnee: one free bulky pickup per calendar year plus a free landfill load voucher. No refrigerators, construction debris, glass, paint, tires or car batteries.
• Olathe: the city utility offers large-item pickup on your trash day; confirm the fee with the city.

2. Donation trucks that actually come to you

• Habitat for Humanity KC ReStore: free pickup, booked online or at 816-231-6889, option 2 (a paid priority option exists). Takes working appliances under 20 years old, furniture, building materials and select upholstered pieces. Refuses mattresses and box springs, sleeper sofas, cribs, TVs and electronics, and exercise equipment. Four stores: East Bottoms, Lenexa, Martin City and the Northland.
• Salvation Army: free pickup at satruck.org or 1-800-SA-TRUCK. Takes furniture including mattresses, working freestanding appliances and TVs five years old or newer. Refuses gas, built-in or broken appliances, older TVs, paint and chemicals.
• Goodwill MOKAN: drop-off. Pickup is case by case. No mattresses, large appliances, any TVs, baby furniture or exercise machines.

Not free, but close: Sleepyhead Beds picks up clean twin through queen mattresses and box springs for $40 a load (no kings, no futons, no sofa beds). Flourish Furniture Bank in Grandview takes drop-offs Tuesday to Saturday mornings and picks up for $25 to $60 depending on count. 3. Scrap metal pays you

Washers, dryers, water heaters, grills, bed frames and anything else that is mostly steel have cash value at a scrap yard. Advantage Metals Recycling and several other metro yards buy household ferrous and non-ferrous metal, appliances included. The rule that trips people: refrigerant has to be drained by someone certified before a yard will take a fridge, freezer or AC unit. Our appliance disposal guide walks through it. "Free scrap pickup" posts on Marketplace and Nextdoor are real people with trailers; leave the item at the curb, take a photo, and do not hand over anything with your name on it.

4. Give it away online

Buy Nothing groups, Facebook Marketplace listed at $0 and Nextdoor move working furniture in hours and broken furniture almost never. What works: one clear photo, honest condition, "curb alert" with the cross streets, first come first served, and no holding it for anyone. What does not: anything upholstered with stains, anything with a missing part, and anything you would not put in your own house.

5. Haul-away when you buy the replacement

Best Buy hauls away one major appliance, TV or fitness machine for $49.99 when it delivers the replacement, or $199.99 as a standalone pickup of up to two large items; its stores also recycle up to ten small electronics per household per day for free, with a $29.99 fee for TVs and monitors bought elsewhere. Lowe's posts a $30 one-for-one appliance haul-away (free for Pro members) as long as the old unit is disconnected. 6. Free city drop-offs for the hard stuff

Paint, chemicals, fluorescent tubes, batteries and motor oil are free at the Kansas City Environmental Campus, 4707 Deramus Avenue, Thursday and Friday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, for residents of Kansas City and 35 partner cities including Independence, Blue Springs, Lee's Summit and Raytown. Johnson County residents use 11231 Mastin Street in Overland Park by appointment. Mobile events left in 2026, all 8:00 AM to noon: September 12 in Excelsior Springs, September 19 at 9400 Ward Parkway, September 26 at Jackson County Public Works in Grain Valley, October 10 at Ruskin High School and November 7 at Manual Career Tech. When free stops being free

Every route above is free for one kind of item. A real cleanout is never one kind of item. The mattress needs Salvation Army, the fridge needs a certified drain and then a scrap yard, the TV needs Best Buy, the paint needs Deramus on a Thursday, the recliner goes to nobody because it is torn. That is four trips, three programs and a weekend, and the recliner is still in the garage.
